Rwanda grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to holders of every African Union passport, making Kigali one of the simplest international trips a Nigerian traveller can book — no embassy visit, no appointment backlog, no supporting-document folder to assemble weeks in advance.
Entry requirements
- A Nigerian passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates
- A return or onward flight ticket
- Proof of accommodation for your stay
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate, required for travellers arriving from Nigeria
Entry permits are issued on arrival at Kigali International Airport, generally allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
A realistic 5-day Kigali & Volcanoes itinerary
Day 1–2: Kigali
Start at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then spend an afternoon at Kimironko Market and the Inema Art Centre. Kigali's Nyamirambo neighbourhood is worth a walking food tour for anyone who wants a less touristy afternoon.
Day 3–5: Volcanoes National Park
A roughly three-hour drive from Kigali, Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's headline destination for mountain gorilla trekking. Permits are limited and should be booked well in advance directly through the Rwanda Development Board, not through unofficial resellers.
Getting there from Nigeria
There are no direct flights from Lagos or Abuja to Kigali; most routes connect through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Kenya Airways/Ethiopian Airlines hubs. Booking six to eight weeks ahead noticeably reduces fare cost on these routes.
Money and connectivity
The Rwandan franc is the local currency; USD is widely accepted in hotels and tour operators but you'll get better value paying in RWF for markets and local transport. Rwandan SIM cards are inexpensive and easy to buy on arrival for data access throughout the trip.
